Quality Fabrication and Service Since 1984
Every decision you make over the course of your remodel plays a part in how the final product turns out.
When preparing for a kitchen or bathroom remodel, we recommend you ask yourself the following:
– What type of countertop is best for my remodel?
– What designs, colors, and patterns am I drawn to?
– How long do I want this countertop to last?
Knowing the answers to these questions creates a firm foundation for your remodel and allows you to move on to the next step, which is to hire a trustworthy and talented contractor. Your project as a whole hinges on the skill level of your contractor, so there’s almost nothing more important than taking your time to choose the contractor who can bring your vision to life in the best way possible.
It’s hard to gauge the merit of a contractor before they start working, though—so how do you go about picking one to hire? That’s the question that many of our customers have, which is why we put together this article—we want to give you a few helpful pointers on how to choose a great contractor who will get the job done right.
Recommendations are important. Many people depend on them before choosing something—whether that something is mundane, like a Friday night movie, or important, like an attorney. Helpful recommendations can go a long way. Doing a quick search on a few contractors you’re looking at will most likely bring up opinions from people online, but you might find it even more helpful to ask the opinions of your friends and family.
Recommendations given online could have been written by anyone—you never know who’s behind the screen. When you get firsthand recommendations from people you know personally, though, you know you can trust them.
If a friend had a great experience with a local contractor, they’re more than likely going to jump at the chance to tell you about it. They’ll want you to have just as great of an experience! You’ll also be able to see, in person, the caliber of work that the contractor is capable of doing.
And if a loved one had a bad experience, you’ll be able to receive a warning from them to stay away from that particular contractor. Word of mouth among friends goes a long way.
While personal recommendations are very useful, professional recommendations are one step higher. Getting recs from people who work in the contracting field allows you an informed opinion from someone who’s familiar with the business and understands the work.
You can always ask the countertop company for professional recommendations when it comes to contractors. At Washington Marble Works, we know plenty of highly skilled and professional contractors who we’d recommend for a job in the blink of an eye.
You can also ask contractors for references of their own. That way, you can call up those references and get an honest opinion before making your decision on whether or not to hire.
And if all else fails, check out a contractor’s previous work. If you like what you see, you’ll know that you can move on with the hiring process. If not, it’s onto the next one.
After narrowing your candidates down to a choice few, it’s a good idea to conduct interviews to get a better idea of each contractor. When you’re interviewing, ask questions such as the following:
– How long have you been in the contracting business?
– What types of countertops do you work with?
– What type of experience does your crew have?
– Can I check out your current job to get a feel for your style?
– How long would a job of this type take you
– What date can you start?
Before jumping into the interview, consider what answers you want to hear. If the contractor’s answers match up with the ideal ones in your head, then you might have found yourself a match.
If you still haven’t made your decision after holding interviews, then it’s time to request estimates from the candidates you have left. There’s nothing wrong with your wallet being the deciding factor after all the steps you’ve taken to get to this point.
To give you a fair estimate, the contractor will head out to your home and check out the project so they can see what they’d be working with. That way, they can get a good idea of what they’d charge.
In the end, you should hire the contractor that you feel the best about working with. If you have further questions about what it takes to hire a great contractor, don’t hesitate to call Washington Marble Works at (253) 466-7497.
